ARCHIVE: SUGGESTED 25 BOOKS

Suggested_25Books_smallFrom the Archive-Spring 2008 issue: SUGGESTED 25 Books.  This list of books are timeless, in that they still hold relevance in our industry. They hold tidbits of inspiration and beauty that open our eyes to the expanse of possibilities when we as artists look upon a face, be it for editorial, bridal, commercial etc. We hope you find the beauty and inspiration in this suggested list, as we did when putting together this for our Spring 2008 issue.

There are few things more inspiring thank a good book – and in the case of makeup artistry – one filled with amazing and inspirational photos. Books connect us to things past, present, familiar and unfamiliar.  They allow us to interpret and dissect, to consider and to imagine.  The selection of books that has been compiled here ranges from some amazing must-have titles that should be in every makeup artist’s personal library, to some of the best research books on period beauty we have ever seen. Most of the books listed here are now out-of-print. some are quite old and some quite rare, while some were published a bit more recently.  some you can find online and others are next to impossible to get your hands on. Some will be technique driven, some will be purely intended to inspire.  But on thing that all of these books have in common is that as a collection they provide a very uncommon review of past interpretations of beauty and makeup artistry, and of how history, fashion, cinema, and stage have impacted how we perceived what “beautiful” means.  These books provide us a glimpse into cultural, political, and historic influences on beauty and makeup that have to be seen and studied at this level to be understood. They are just a few of the infinite number of titles that you will find if only you go out and look for them, and when you experience the rush of excitement having found an incredible, inspiring stash at a local used book shop – it will become clear that your art and your craft are worth the effort, and that inspirational tools are worth the search.
